This week, Universidade de Vigo has received a new visit from a delegation of Chinese researchers that strengthens its collaboration on matters of agri-food innovation with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS).
The researchers Jesus Simal-Gandara and Jianbo Xiao welcomed a distinguished group of researchers from the Institute of Food Science and Technology from the CAAS, led by Professor Qiang Wang on a two-day scientific visit scheduled for September 20–21, 2025. The delegation also includes Prof. Aimin Shi, Ms. Jinjin Zhu, and, Mr. Fei Xiang, and focuses on improving China-EU scientific & technological collaboration to drive sustainable solutions for innovation on the development of plant proteins and sustainable food systems.

During their stay, the visitors will have the opportunity to engage in a series of meetings, lab tours, and working sessions with local researchers, anchored by prof. Simal-Gandara and Jianbo Xiao, both leading figures in UVigo’s Agro-environmental and food science research, and both recognised as Highly Cited Researchers (HCRs) several times amongst in the last years. Professor Qiang Wang is a key figure in the field, and counts with decades of research leadership, therefore strengthening the delegation’s ability to establish long-term institutional projects and capacity-building initiatives.

With this visit, AA1 group establishes its role in contributing towards the establishment of UVigo as a European hub for innovation in sustainable agriculture, food safety and other related areas. Under the guidance of prof. Simal-Gandara and with the support of international partners like CAAS, the Group is achieving to ignite an array of international initiatives that align with the Sustainable Development Goals and other policy objectives identified as strategic by the European Union.
As a result of the visit, both institutions intend to formalize outcomes mutually benefitting both entities.
